2023 Year in Review

Throughout 2023, ISB research has been published in impactful peer-reviewed journals and our scientists have been featured in major media outlets and popular podcasts. In this 2023 Year in Review, we showcase some of our most important and interesting highlights of the year.

Dr. Jennifer Reich Talks Vaccines and COVID In ISB-Town Hall Seattle Livestream

Sociologist Dr. Jennifer Reich, author of “Calling the Shots,” was the featured speaker of a virtual event hosted by ISB and Town Hall Seattle. She discussed the complex and increasingly political world of vaccines, how vaccines are viewed as a personal consumption product vs. a public health solution, COVID-19 vaccine development, and more.

Igniting Curiosity, Catalyzing Change

At the 6th Annual Valerie Logan Luncheon held Thursday, the day’s theme – “Igniting Curiosity, Catalyzing Change” – was evident throughout. Every year, ISB celebrates Valerie Logan, the founder of our education programs, and all her work toward providing K-16 professional development for educators, high school STEM curriculum development, undergraduate research internships, and, crucially, student access to diverse mentors. This year’s event raised a record $140,000 to fund ISB’s education programs.

ISB at Startup Weekend

Several ISB staffers participated in Startup Weekend UW on Jan. 25-27. Graduate student Karlyn Beer and software engineer Wei-Ju Wu, both of the Baliga Group, pitched PoorMe.co, a public health social network.
