Former Undergrad Intern Publishes Algorithm in PLOS Computational Biology

Posted March 1, 2017 In a study published in PLoS Computational Biology, researchers at Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) have developed a multiscale mutation clustering algorithm (M2C) that identifies variable length regions with high mutation density in cancer genes. The M2C algorithm was developed by William Poole (first author on the paper), who started as a summer intern in 2013 as part of ISB’s Center for Systems Biology internship program….

ISB’s Summer Interns Brightest of the Bright

Photo above: ISB’s high school interns presented their research. Every summer, ISB and ISB’s Center for Systems Biology welcome undergraduate and high school students for internships in our labs. Each student is paired with a mentor and works on research actually taking place in the respective lab. The internships are extremely competitive and we see some of the brightest young minds from across the country.   Read about their experiences…

ISB at USA Science and Engineering Festival

ISB scientists Aaron Brooks (Baliga Lab) and Martin Shelton (Hood Lab) attended the USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington D.C. on April 26-27. They, and ISB senior research engineer, Chris Lausted, developed an interactive network activity involving circuit boxes that represent nodes and fiber optic cables to connect them. The project and trip to D.C. were supported by funds through NIH/NIGMS and ISB’s Center for Systems Biology. From Brooks:…

It Takes A System To Know A System

Figure depicting cross-disciplinary collaborations among lab groups and usage of technologies housed in ISB’s core facilities. In August, ISB learned that our National Center for Systems Biology was renewed for $13.7 million over the next five years. This is no small feat given that only two National Centers were funded in this round and that there’s fierce competition for diminishing government grants. Here’s how your tax dollars are being put…
