What will the next decade hold for brain science? At ISB’s 12th Annual International Symposium: Systems Biology and the Brain, which took place on April 14-15, we began exploring this question.

With the announcement in January about the European Commission awarding $1.29 billion to The Human Brain Project (based in Switzerland) and the news in February that the Obama administration would be announcing a $3 billion plan to support the BRAIN Initiative, brain research is a hot topic.

The Symposium is ISB’s marquee scientific event and each year it draws top-level speakers who collectively help advance systems biology. This year, U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott delivered the welcome and shared his thoughts on the importance of continued federal support for basic science research.

The opening keynote talk was presented by Dr. Christof Koch, the chief scientific officer at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. ISB collaborates with the Allen Institute on research, so we were particularly thrilled that Dr. Koch could join us.

There were about 200 attendees, including one 13-year-old advanced student who has an interest in science.
