ISB researchers and their colleagues from the Center for Infectious Disease Research held the 5th annual joint poster session on June 30. The event kicked off with lightning talks, which featured two-minute research summaries from each scientist who submitted a poster. Following the lightning talks, researchers were able to peruse posters and chat with colleagues about any potential collaborations. ISB and CIDResearch takes turns hosting the event, which is intended…

In describing systems biology and the distinguishing characteristics of ISB’s approach, we always emphasize how our lab groups are intentionally and necessarily interdisciplinary. One of our labs, for example, includes molecular biologists, microbiologists, geneticists, engineers, oceanographers, and even an astrophysicist. The complexity of biology in this age of “big data” requires diverse teams in order tackle such vast amounts of data and to make sense of it all. New technologies…

ISB held its all-staff retreat in Leavenworth on Sept. 8 and 9. In order to do the kind of science we do, we need time away to connect with one another, recharge and envision big ideas. While there are plenty of sessions on our science, there are also plenty of opportunities to have a little fun. This year, we held an “open-mic” night. Several ISB staffers performed – including Dr….

ISB was founded on the belief that it takes cross-disciplinary teams of scientists in order to tackle the biggest challenges in biology. When Hadi Partovi, cofounder of Code.org, reached out to us for a comment about the importance of computer science, it was without hesitation that we shared the following quote from ISB president, Dr. Lee Hood. The video was produced by Code.org and has made the rounds this week….
