UW Students Get a Taste of Systems Biology

“It was very interesting to learn how all the different backgrounds, such as one person having majored in physics, computer science, or chemistry, can come together to achieve a goal. Also, how some have bachelors or postdoc degrees. I also learned more about how PDMS is used and how there are teams that create their own equipment for experiments and data.” – LSAMP Student This afternoon, a group of freshmen…

Greater Good: Successful High School Interns

Every summer, ISB welcomes a group of high school interns, hosted through our Systems Education Experiences program. ISB is proud of its collaborative and cross-disciplinary culture and we work hard to nurture an environment that allows our staff to achieve at a high level. It was especially gratifying to get this comment from one of our interns, who had just completed her time here: “At ISB, I witnessed collaboration that…

K-12 Science Education: MESA Math Scholars Visit ISB

Just as the Seattle tourist traffic picks up in the summer, the intern and visitor traffic at ISB spikes during July and August. It’s always inspiring to see the fresh faces of high school students in our halls. On Aug. 7, the MESA Math Scholars came to ISB to visit our labs and spend some time with a few of our scientists. MESA stands for Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement and…

Summer Interns

Summer brings high school and undergraduate interns to the halls of ISB. ISB’s internships are competitive and students all agree that being immersed in the cross-disciplinary, collaborative and entrepreneurial culture that distinguishes ISB is a profound experience. One example of the ISB difference involves Will Greene, who will be a freshman at California Polytechnic State University this fall. Will trained with ISB senior research engineer Chris Lausted, who invented a…

ISB Education Team: Next Gen Science Standards for Teachers

ISB is committed to K-12 science education. Today, to launch a new OSPI Math & Science Partnership, we are hosting 40 teachers from Seattle Public Schools and 20 teachers from Renton Public Schools to help them develop curriculum aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (and how all that fits with Common Core Standards). Go, ISB education team! (Full gallery)

K-12 Science Education: ISB Meets with Seattle Superintendent

One of ISB’s core beliefs is the importance of being fully engaged in how science is taught and learned at all levels – especially K-12. Our president, Dr. Lee Hood, has met with every Seattle Public Schools superintendent since 1994. Today, he met with current superintendent, Jose Banda, to discuss ISB’s ongoing partnership with the district. Superintendent Banda also toured ISB to speak with staff to learn about contemporary science…

Viral Video: Spanish, French or Code?

ISB was founded on the belief that it takes cross-disciplinary teams of scientists in order to tackle the biggest challenges in biology. When Hadi Partovi, cofounder of Code.org, reached out to us for a comment about the importance of computer science, it was without hesitation that we shared the following quote from ISB president, Dr. Lee Hood. The video was produced by Code.org and has made the rounds this week….

President Obama Presents National Medal of Science to Dr. Lee Hood

ISB NEWS We have been celebrating Dr. Lee Hood’s National Medal of Science, which he received during a White House ceremony on Feb. 1. While the medal honors Lee’s career as a visionary scientist, we would like to thank all the past and current collaborators who have contributed to the success of not only Lee but of ISB, too. On Nov. 29, 2012, ISB held its first annual Valerie Logan Luncheon to honor Valerie Logan, Dr. Lee Hood’s wife, and to raise funds for our work related to K-12 science education. The City of Seattle also issued a proclamation for Nov. 29 as “Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Day.” We also presented the first Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award to Don McConkey, who is the assistant…

Every Gift Counts

ISB’s Steve Sample loads turkey dinners to deliver to the YWCA. Watch the video about the emotional day. A complete, hot meal is something most of us take for granted. At Thanksgiving, we joke about abundant leftovers and the subsequent “food coma.” But for hundreds of families in Seattle and King and Snohomish counties, a holiday feast that would have been a fantasy became a reality because of the YWCA…

An Evening to Remember

About 20 years ago, Carole Ellison attended a lecture by Dr. Lee Hood shortly after he had arrived at the University of Washington to start the Department of Molecular Biotechnology. She was impressed by his vision for the future of science and healthcare and vowed to meet him one day. This wish and her lifelong interest in science and human health led her to ISB. This summer, Carole finally was…
