New Compliance Certification

Chris Witwer, ISB’s Associate Director of Compliance, has been appointed to the Council for Certification of IRB Professionals (CCIP), which develops and maintains certification standards for HRPP/IRB professionals. The CCIP is a credentialing program of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), a professional organization whose mission is to advance the highest ethical standards in the conduct of biomedical, behavioral, and social science research. The appointment is well-timed. On Jan. 19, DHHS issued the first substantive revisions to existing IRB regulations since 1991. It’s not yet clear whether the revisions will remain on the books, but if so, Chris will be working alongside a diverse group of IRB leaders from across the U.S. to interpret those changes and apply them to the CIP credential.     How Microbes Evolve to Spatially Divide and Conquer an Environment 

    ISB researchers examined representative organisms of two classes of microbes whose interaction contributes to the conversion of more than 1 gigaton of carbon into methane every year. They found that gene mutations selected over a relatively short timeframe in the two microbes led to distinct functions.
