Allison Lee, an ISB research associate who’s on board the RVIB Nathaniel Palmer for a research cruise in the Ross Sea in Antarctica, has sent these images from her first few days on the research cruise. Each scientist on board the ice breaker is allotted just 15MB of data per day, which limits how many photos she can share. But these give you a taste of what it’s like on board. Read related posts.

The CTD is being lowered in to the frigid waters. We lower it anywhere from 1-4 times a day. This process (lowering to 1000 meters and bringing it back up collecting water along the way) can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
