The Wellbody Academy and ISB’s Family Genomics Group

What You Saw in the News:

The Pacific Science Center just opened a new permanent exhibit called “Professor Wellbody’s Academy of Health & Wellness.” Here’s a description of the exhibit from the PSC web site:
“Seven-thousand square feet of hands-on inventions, gadgets, activities and experiences will present health as a life-long process of balancing exercise, diet, proper rest and hygiene. These tools and resources for managing health and well-being will help guests discover the control each of us has over many aspects of our wellness.

“We face a constant and changing stream of research on do’s and don’ts around our health and wellness,” said Bryce Seidl, Pacific Science Center president and CEO. “As the region’s neutral convener for health education and dialogue, Wellbody’s Academy will be the ideal backdrop for the community to come together for discovery and discussion in a friendly setting.”

ISB’s Connection:

Within the Wellbody’s Academy exhibit, there is an area called “The Studio” that will focus on healthcare careers as well as the health, wellness and life sciences research that’s happening in Seattle and surrounding regions. The display will change every six months.

We are excited about The Studio because it offers ISB ongoing opportunities to highlight our cutting-edge research. The inaugural installation, on display through May 2013, profiles ISB’s Family Genomics Group. The display includes the poster below and a series of videos that feature Dr. Jared Roach and Dr. Hannah Cox, members of the Family Genomics Group.

Hannah also contributed a piece to PSC’s upcoming issue of Discover magazine that describes some of the group’s work, including a collaboration with researchers in Colombia and at the University of California, Santa Barbara, to study the world’s largest family afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. This clan of 5,000 is from the Antioquia region in the Andes. With ISB’s help to perform whole genome sequencing (analyzing the genetics and inherited risk factors of the clan), researchers hope to identify the underlying genes that cause Alzheimer’s.
