Ecological Succession Figure

Secondary succession following an ecological disturbance. As a forest ecosystem recovers from a fire, pioneer species (such as grasses and forbs) move into the burned area first, paving the way for intermediate species (shrubs and small trees) and culminating in the return of climax species (high-canopy trees).
