Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is dedicated to preparing the next generation of students to learn and live in a STEM-centric society. Ignite STEM — a new iteration of what was formerly the annual Valerie Logan Luncheon — is a chance for us to come together to support and celebrate ISB’s STEM efforts.
Please join us at Ignite STEM and meet our Education team along with teachers and students who have participated in our programs. You’re in for a fun evening with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and hands-on activities. We will also present the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award to an outstanding
leader in STEM education.

2023 Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award Recipient & STEM Program Manager, Puget Sound Educational Service District
Valerie Logan Hood
Throughout her career, Valerie Logan Hood served as a visionary and active leader in science education. When Valerie and her husband, Dr. Lee Hood, moved to Seattle in 1992, they brought with them a passion and commitment for science education.
When Lee co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology in 2000, he maintained his commitment to education. Valerie’s leadership helped to establish ISB’s commitment to education and a vision that all students should have an opportunity to learn science.
While Valerie has stepped down from leading ISB’s education and outreach programs, she continues to inspire our work. Recognizing her leadership, ISB celebrates her impact by identifying an educator in the community as recipient of the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award. This year's recipient of the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award is Dr. Cheryl Lydon. Congratulations, Cheryl!
The ISB Education team, along with students and teachers who have participated in our programs, will host a series of engaging hands-on STEM activities during the event. Each activity will showcase the cutting-edge science that we bring into the classroom and will provide insight into how we work with the school system to ensure quality STEM experiences for every student.
A focal point of ISB is making STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education a reality for every student regardless of race, gender or socioeconomic status.
We work with students, teachers, principals, and other district leaders — every part of the education system — and we involve STEM professionals to provide support and inspiration for each of those stakeholders to learn, live, work and engage in an increasingly STEM-centric society.
