The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is dedicated to making quality STEM education a reality for every student. Ignite STEM is a chance for us to come together to support and celebrate the impact ISB Education has on teachers and students.
Please join us for refreshments and fun! You’ll have a chance to meet our Education team along with teachers and students from past programs. Celebrate with us as we announce the 2024 Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education award recipients: Dr. Phil Bell and Dr. Deb Morrison.
Registration is $25 to attend and free for past students.
Valerie Logan Hood
Throughout her career, Valerie Logan Hood served as a visionary and active leader in science education. When Valerie and her husband, Dr. Lee Hood, moved to Seattle in 1992, they brought with them a passion and commitment for science education.
When Lee co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology in 2000, he maintained his commitment to education. Valerie’s leadership helped to establish ISB’s commitment to education and a vision that all students should have an opportunity to learn science.
While Valerie has stepped down from leading ISB’s education and outreach programs, she continues to inspire our work. Recognizing her leadership, ISB celebrates her impact by identifying an educator in the community as recipient of the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award. This year we honor two recipients of the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award: Dr. Phil Bell and Dr. Deb Morrison.

The ISB Education team will host a hands-on science activity during the event. Take a moment to try your hand at the paper balloon paradox and learn about how we bring engaging science into the classroom!
A focal point of ISB is making STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education a reality for every student regardless of race, gender or socioeconomic status.
We work with students, teachers, principals, and other district leaders — every part of the education system — and we involve STEM professionals to provide support and inspiration for each of those stakeholders to learn, live, work and engage in an increasingly STEM-centric society.
