How Concepts and Innovations are Translated from the Lab into Real-World Clinical Applications

ISB’s 18th Annual International Symposium, called Future of Health, featured accomplished scientists and leaders from industry and academia who discussed how concepts and innovations are translated from the lab into real-world clinical applications and therapies. Valerie Logan Luncheon Honors ‘Elevating K-12 STEM Education’

The seventh annual Valerie Logan Luncheon was held November 8, 2018, and celebrated the mission of the ISB Education team to engage entire school systems — from principals and administrators to teachers and students — to ensure all students are STEM literate. The theme of the event was “Elevating K-12 STEM Education.”

Reimagine: A Night for Scientific Wellness

On Tuesday evening, ISB kicked off a brand new fundraising event called “Reimagine: A Night for Scientific Wellness, hosted by Chris and Barb Moe” It was a huge success — 60 guests gathered at The Collective, one of South Lake Union’s newest hot spots. Guests gathered to listen and learn from Drs. Lee Hood, Jim Heath and Sean Gibbons.

ISB’s Innovator Award Program rewards high-risk, cross-disciplinary research projects

The Innovator Award Program at Institute for Systems Biology is an annual internal initiative started in 2017 that aims to stimulate creativity, innovation and collaboration within ISB, to provide funding support for high-risk, high-reward projects, and to develop new technologies and discoveries that will impact the entire research organization.

At our 17th Annual International Symposium, focusing on the Future of Health, we welcomed speakers who are experts in diverse areas including environmental and occupational health, infectious disease transmission and forecast, drug and vaccine development, communicable disease dynamics, and beyond. 2018 Consilience Event

ISB’s 2018 Consilience event on the topic of “Exploring Plasticity” will be held on Friday afternoon, May 25th. Speakers featured: Chris Young, CEO of ChefSteps and Michael Merzenich, PhD, CEO of BrainHQ.

Igniting Curiosity, Catalyzing Change

At the 6th Annual Valerie Logan Luncheon held Thursday, the day’s theme – “Igniting Curiosity, Catalyzing Change” – was evident throughout. Every year, ISB celebrates Valerie Logan, the founder of our education programs, and all her work toward providing K-16 professional development for educators, high school STEM curriculum development, undergraduate research internships, and, crucially, student access to diverse mentors. This year’s event raised a record $140,000 to fund ISB’s education programs.

Consilience: The Museum of Awe

As part of the Institute for Systems Biology’s annual Consilience event (which took place on May 19, 2017), Dan Goods and David Delgado presented their talk The Museum of Awe. The Seattle Channel produced the video of the talk. Dan Goods and David Delgado are Visual Strategists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.  

Consilience: Exploring E-Textiles

As part of the Institute for Systems Biology’s annual Consilience event (which took place on May 19, 2017), Afroditi Psarra presented her talk E-textiles: hand-crafting technological artifacts. The Seattle Channel produced the video of the talk. Afroditi Psarra, PhD,  is an assistant professor at DXARTS at the University of Washington. She is a multidisciplinary artist working with e-textiles.

The Museum of Awe is all around us; you just have to find a door. Earth To Dinner Rallies ISB Community Around Climate Action

It started with a call to action: On Dec. 12, the first anniversary of the Paris Agreement, gather around the dinner table with friends and other community members to discuss climate action. ISB researchers and their colleagues from the Center for Infectious Disease Research held the 5th annual joint poster session on June 30.
