‘Innovation to Impact:’ 8th Annual Valerie Logan Luncheon Shines Light on ISB Education

The 8th Annual Valerie Logan Luncheon celebrated ISB Education’s mission of engaging entire school systems — from principals and administrators to teachers and students — to ensure all students are STEM literate. Nearly 100 people attended the event at ISB, and generously gave more than $100,000 for ISB Education.

ISB Unveils New Brand Ahead of 20th Anniversary

We created a new brand identity — including logo and tag line — to reflect ISB’s evolution since our inception in 2000, and ahead of our 20th anniversary. ISB is proud to be a part of the vibrant research community in Seattle, and is committed to translational and collaborative science.

‘Reimagine,’ ISB’s annual fundraiser, raises nearly $35,000 for groundbreaking science

About 75 people attended “Reimagine,” ISB’s annual fundraiser, and contributed nearly $35,000 to accelerate groundbreaking research. The event was held at The Ruins, and featured presentations by legendary biologist and ISB Co-founder Dr. Lee Hood and renowned scientist and ISB President Dr. Jim Heath.

In a public panel discussion put on by Town Hall Seattle and ISB, legendary biologist Dr. Lee Hood, PSJH Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Amy Compton-Phillips, and PATH’s Program Leader of Diagnostics Tala de los Santos addressed the promise — and challenges — of implementing and practicing 21st century health care.

The seventh annual Valerie Logan Luncheon was held November 8, 2018, and celebrated the mission of the ISB Education team to engage entire school systems — from principals and administrators to teachers and students — to ensure all students are STEM literate. The theme of the event was “Elevating K-12 STEM Education.”

Dr. Kyle Kinoshita Accepts Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award

Dr. Kyle Kinoshita was honored with the Valerie Logan Leadership in Science Education Award at ISB’s Valerie Logan Luncheon. This award is presented to community leaders who are committed to an educational practice grounded in research, who build educational networks, and who share ISB’s bold vision that all children should have the opportunity to learn science.

The Decades-Long Path That Led Philanthropist Carole Ellison to ISB

Philanthropist Carole Ellison created the recently unveiled K. Carole Ellison Fellows in Bioinformatics. “It’s so exciting to be part of (young researchers’) lives and help them along in their careers,” Ellison said.

ISB Foundation created to support research and education through philanthropy

The Institute for Systems Biology has created the ISB Foundation, which aims to implement fundraising programs to appeal to individual donors and foundations, provide support for capital expenditures for equipment or building additions, grow the ISB endowment, and create new endowed positions and programs.

In honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week in late September, ISB’s staff recently gathered to honor and celebrate all of our devoted and hardworking postdocs. The event included speeches from a number of faculty members. “Postdocs are the heart of ISB,” Dr. Nathan Price, professor and associate director, told the gathering.

Consilience: The Museum of Awe

As part of the Institute for Systems Biology’s annual Consilience event (which took place on May 19, 2017), Dan Goods and David Delgado presented their talk The Museum of Awe. The Seattle Channel produced the video of the talk. Dan Goods and David Delgado are Visual Strategists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.  

Consilience: Exploring E-Textiles

As part of the Institute for Systems Biology’s annual Consilience event (which took place on May 19, 2017), Afroditi Psarra presented her talk E-textiles: hand-crafting technological artifacts. The Seattle Channel produced the video of the talk. Afroditi Psarra, PhD,  is an assistant professor at DXARTS at the University of Washington. She is a multidisciplinary artist working with e-textiles.

ISB hosts its annual Consilience event on May 19 at 1pm. The theme is “Integrating Diverse Approaches to Communicating the Complexities of Science.” This year’s speakers include Dan Goods and David Delgado from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Afroditi Psarra from University of Washington. Aitchison Lab Accepts ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Jennifer Smith, senior research scientist in the John Aitchison Lab, was tagged to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
